Today we spent the afternoon and evening with two groups of kids from the Long Beach area; S.T.A.R.S. and AAPCA. These groups were involved in anti drug and abuse type programs. At first we were unsure of how to talk to them since we didn’t want to use our "traditional" interview style. Instead we broke the ice with them by forming a Socratic seminar circle to discuss a dating violence article. We then mixed together with them and split into three discussion groups outside in the park. The three groups randomly discussed common issues affecting teens along with their own personal lives. Two camera groups wandered between the groups and picked up bites of their conversations to get an idea of what they had to say. This method really helped in getting some information from the STARS and Asian kids without pressuring them and putting them on the spot in front of the camera. Our third interview style was to conduct a personal interview with each of the California kids. These interviews were unstaged and set in random areas throughout the park with two small camera crews. Overall our talent did a great job of getting the kids to open up about their personal issues and opinions as well as release some powerful emotions. At the end of the shoot, PIPP felt that we had made a strong connection with the two groups and that the meeting was an overall success.
