Character Analysis: ROBIN Robin is a 17 years old female. She is a high academic achiever, and the captain on the soccer team. She was on her own as a child, and didn’t rely on anyone to survive. Her father is no longer in the picture, and she never met him. Her mother is a drunk and a severe druggie. The neglect that Robin faced as a child made her determined to make her own future. She diligently practices soccer and has made a name for herself. She applied for an athletic scholarship to help her go to college. Because her mother is unemployed, Robin is barely getting by. The athletic scholarship is her last chance at a future. Robin never has any down time, she is taking every possible honors/ Ap class she can. Her school schedule is completely packed with classes. She is the type of girl to push herself to almost her breaking point. She believes that you can never be too trusting. She doesn’t have a big group of friends because of her trust issues, but the people that she does trust (Layla) she has 100% trust in. Layla and Robin have been best friends since second grade, and their bond is so strong and unbreakable. Robin is a leader, she is so focused of being successful that she is able to bring the team up with her. The injury that Robin gets during the film is so devastating, because the way she sees it, it is the only thing separating her from a successful future. Her complete trust in Layla is what lead to her even contemplating doing drugs.

LAYLA Layla is Robin’s best friend. She is also 17 years old, and is one of the oldest in her friend group. She was able to get her license early, which helped to have everyone put trust in her. Layla had a slightly trying childhood. Both her father and mother are successful surgeons. This is great for comfort and money, but not for the family. Because both parents have such strenuous jobs, neither of them are home very often, and go on several business trips. Layla has the home to herself, and is able to do with is as she pleases. Layla is a very popular person with a large friend group, and has decided that she will use her freedom to throw massive parties. Her parties are well known, and highly anticipated by the whole school. Layla is someone who likes to have fun. She does occasional social drinking and occasionally smokes pot. She is not a bad person, actually quite the opposite, she is very caring and nurturing to her friends. She has been known to lend out money to people like Robin or other friends who need it. Because of her occasional use of pot, she doesn’t see the drug as harmful. Which is why she gives it to Robin, because she genuinely thinks that it will help her. When Robin gets hooked, Layla realizes what she started, and feels like it is her fault.

DERIK Derik is 19 years old. He just graduated from high school last year. He was friends with Layla for a few years. He had a normal childhood up to the age of 11. His mother had an affair and his parents divorced. He was put in permanent custody with his father. At age 14, he started smoking pot. By age 16, he was hanging out with a new group of friends and supplied them with drugs. Slowly, he began to sell drugs other than pot. Derik starts to earn enough money to buy himself things. Halfway through junior year, Derik’s dad started to gamble. His dad stole the money that Derik illegally obtained and blew it all at a casino. At age 18, Derik had already attained the money he lost through more sales. He decided to take a few of his buddies and get their own place. Because Layla and Derik were friends, Derik was happy to help out Robin. Renting the new house with his friends left him without much money to live on again. The way he sees it, his only option is to steal.

MOTHER Robin’s mother (Laura) has not had it easy. At just the age of 19, she was knocked up by her high school sweetheart. Laura lost the baby and separated from her boyfriend. At age 23, she met a guy named David. They dated for 2 years before she wanted to have a child. David didn’t want to have a child, but she persisted. David left her and took their savings with him. She is now left with no money. Laura started drinking and smoking to relieve the stress. 5 years later, her drug addiction had skyrocketed. At this point she had been on so many drugs that she couldn’t remember the last few years. In her drugged state, she got knocked up yet again. Except this time, the baby was Robin. Despite the drug usage, Robin was born a healthy child. Unfortunately, her addiction to drugs lead to her still doing drugs, even with a new child. The drugs made her an empty shell, but when sobering up, Laura gets violent and is just waiting to do more drugs.

COACH The coach played soccer though out high school and collage. He/she loves to help out aspiring athletes, and had trained many successful athletes. He/she takes pride in the sport, and the students. He/she is well recognized, and has an image to hold up. He/she takes particular interest in Robin because (before the drugs) she had the same passion for soccer. The coach tries to have the team reach their full potential, to help them succeed.

EMMA Emma is a senior, and is 17 years old. She grew up with a wealthy family and does average in school. She plays defense, and is known on her team to be a good player. Emma likes to drink and smoke at parties, as a way to have fun and unwind. Emma is a social butterfly, and loves to surround herself with other people.

SARA Sara is a Junior, and 16 years old. She is the youngest of her friend group. She has had a good childhood. She is an above average student despite her dislike for school, and also plays defense on the soccer team. She is generally a very bubbly and happy person. She enjoys a drink or two at parties, but does not smoke. She always wants to help her friends, and cares about their wellbeing. She is the type of person to panic when put under stress.
